Power Systems Engineer | Battery R&D
onsite
South Burlington, VT
Description
We are seeking an Power Systems Engineer to join the Battery team and design our high voltage protections for new aircraft variants - shaping new HV system architectures, modeling fault cases, designing and executing full-scale validation tests, and partnering with the high voltage team on mechanical design. This person will adapt coordination models to new configurations, build and maintain models for fault analysis and aircraft-level integration, design efficient test campaigns, and analyze test data to validate and refine predictions. This position requires a blend of knowledge in electrical engineering, system modeling, test design, and data analysis. As an Power Systems Engineer, you will work in a small team environment to own the full workflow—from early architecture trades through Simulink modeling to hands-on lab and aircraft testing to certified flight hardware. This position offers the possibility to learn something new every day and help shape the future of aviation.
How you will contribute to revolutionizing electric aviation:
- Design electrical protection schemes for new aircraft configurations—from modeling to full-scale testing that prove your ideas work
- Design and execute electrical system tests—spec DAQ hardware, get hands-on with lab and aircraft testing, and close the loop between data and models
- Build battery models that integrate with aircraft flight science simulations—enabling system-level analysis and design trades
- Partner with the high voltage team on mechanical design—translating insights from the fuse coordination modeling and testing to the aircraft design
- Collaborate across software, electrical, and systems engineering to support battery certification efforts
- Do whatever job is needed to solve problems and make the team better
Minimum Qualifications:
● Experience with modeling of real-world systems in a relevant language (e.g., Python or MATLAB / Simulink)
● Ability to synthesize large, complex datasets into actionable engineering insights
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
● Growth mindset and initiative to own problems, iterate quickly, and deliver practical solutions
● Desire to learn, experiment, and make others around you better
Above and Beyond Qualifications:
● Contributions to HV system design in the EV or other HVDC applications
● Hands-on experience designing data acquisition systems—selecting sample rates, resolution, filtering, and instrumentation to capture the physics that matters
● Skill in design of experiments—detailing efficient test matrices that validate models with minimal testing and maximum learning
● Ability to diagnose model-to-hardware discrepancies—using test data to identify what's missing, what's wrong, and what needs refinement
● Prior work with aviation certification standards (e.g., DO-178, DO-160) or work in other safety-critical environments
● Experience modeling and system identification of real-world systems in MATLAB and Simulink
● Communication with DAQ devices, data manipulation and storage, and GUI design with Python and Qt
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
● Able to work in a dog-friendly and open-office environment
Compensation:
$ 100,000 - $ 125,000 / year
